Mark 12:24,27 - "And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God?
He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err."
To Err means: 1. To wander from the right way; to deviate from the true course or
purpose. 2. To miss the right way, in morals or religion; to deviate from the
path or line of duty; to stray by design or mistake. 3. To mistake; to commit error; to do wrong from ignorance or
inattention. 4. To wander; to ramble.
The Lord Jesus Christ was talking to the Sadducees in the above text; the
Sadducees did not believe in a resurrection. He told them that they erred because they didn't know the scriptures. There are many things and people
which can cause a person to err; 1. Strong drink. (Isaiah 28:7 - "But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of
the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink;
they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.") 2. The Love of Money. (I
Timothy 6:10 - "For the love of money is the root of all evil: whichwhile some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrow.") 3. Science falsely so called. (I Timothy 6:20-21 - "O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust,
avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith.") 4.
False Instruction. (Proverbs 19:27 - "Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.") 5.
Leaders. (Isaiah 3:12 - "As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to
err, and destroy the way of thy paths." I'll put in a little side note here: it was never meant for a woman to lead. Woman was created to
follow.  Isaiah 9:16 - "For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they
that are led of them are destroyed.") Another side note: leaders make people to err by lying and by taking the things of God lighly. Look at
Jeremiah 23:32 - "Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their
lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD." 6.
Evil Spirits. (Isaiah 19:14 says, "The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every
work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit." And Hosea 4:12 says, "My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth
unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.") Also, if you will look in I
Kings 22, the Lord sent a lying spirit to deceive Ahab and to make him err. 7. The Lord can because of the hardening of your heart. (Isaiah
63:17 - "O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants' sake, the tribes of
thine inheritance.") Pharoah is a prime example of this, if you study him, the Bible says that he hardened his heart first, then the Lord
started hardening his heart.   So, there are many different things that can cause a person to err (and I am sure this is not a definitive list), but it all starts with not  knowing the Scriptures. I John 4:6 says, "We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error." And how are we supposed to deal with those who are in error? James 5:16-20 says that we should pray because the effectual ferven prayer of a righteous man availeth much and we can convert those that are in error. When we do it will cover a
multitude of sins.  I'll leave you with this warning in James 1:16, "Do not err, my beloved brethren."
Until next time, may the Lord bless you.
