Only by pride cometh contention: but
with the well advised is wisdom. - Proverbs 13:10
He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that
putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. - Proverbs
28:25
In the two verses above, we see that pride is the root of
all strife and contention with other people. In Proverbs 13
there, it says that ONLY by
pride cometh contention. In other words, there is no other
reason for contention, but pride. When you find yourself in
contention with your
husband, your child, your parent, a friend, a brother or
sister, orwhoever, it is because one of the two of you or
both of you have pride in
your heart. Then in Proverbs 28, it says that someone who is
of a proud heart will stir up strife. Pride will always stir
up strife, because the
proud will never admit they are wrong, they do not want to
submit to another's ideal, thinking, command, etc. Ephesians
5:21 says, "Submitting
yourselves one to another in the fear of God." Then in I
Peter 5:5 it says, "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves
unto the elder. Yea, all
of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with
humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to
the humble." There are two
direct commands for us to submit ourselves to others and we
see in I Peter there that we must be humble in order to do
that. Another verse
that comes to mind is Romans 12:3, "For I say, through the
grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to
think of himself more
highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly,
according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of
faith." Philippians 2:1-4 says,
"If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any
comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any
bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my
joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of
one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife
or vainglory; but in
lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than
themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every
man also on the things of others."
Looking at these Scriptures, we see that it is the will of
the Lord for us to be of a low mind, not thinking too much
of ourselves, putting
others wishes and others wants before ours so that we do not
do anything through strife or for our own glory.
There are many other verses to look at concerning this
subject. I hope you will take the time to study it out for
yourself. I am sorry that this
devotional is so over due. Please pray that the Lord will
help me to keep responsibilities and duties prioritized
rightly so that I can get these
out in a more timely fashion.
God bless you until next time.
