And Mary said,
Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to
thy word. And the angel departed from her.- Luke
1:38
The above verse is
Mary's response to the angel when he told her that she was
going to conceive of the Holy Ghost and have a child; she
said, "be it unto me according to thy word."
First of all, she submitted to the Lord's will immediately;
now,she did have a question or two for the angel about how
it was going to happen saying in verse 34 of Luke 1,
"how shall this be, seeing I know not a man?" And
after the angel answered her questions she completely
surrendered to the Lord's will. Now, you have to remember
that she was already espoused to a husband and that was the
same as being already married in those days. She was at risk
of being put away and even stoned for commiting adultery
(Matt. 1:19). But Joseph, who was a just man the Bible tells
us was not hasty in putting her away, but while he was
considering it, an angel came to him in a dream and showed
him that this was of the Lord and he too submitted
immediately, check Matthew 1:19-25. Everything that the Lord
ever told Joseph to do, he did it immediately. Look at
Matthew 2 when the Lord told Joseph to flee to Egypt to
escape Herod, the Bible says that Joseph arose in the night
and fled, no questions asked. I am talking about immediate
submission and obedience. Compare this couple with some of
the other couples in the Bible that God told they were going
to miraculously conceive and bear a child. Abraham and Sarah
tried to help God out by using Hagar and later Sarah laughed
at God when he told them she was going to have a son.
Zacharias didn't believe the angel Gabriel when he told him
that Elizabeth was going to conceive. Now, Mary and Joseph
were mortal humans just like the rest of these people, but
what set them apart was there immediate submission to the
will of the Lord. And when the Lord brings things into our
life to prove us or to purge us or maybe just to bring
Himself glory, why do we fight against His will. He has
proven to us time and time again that we can totally trust
Him and we have example after example from the Word of God
that He will never let us down if we trust and obey, but yet
we still do not submit readily. We are supposed to be like
the Lord who became a servant and submitted Himself to the
Father when He said "not my will, but thine be done"
in Luke 22:42.
Until next time, I hope
that you have a good Christmas, and please remember to be
thankful that the Lord Jesus Christ came and was manifested
in the flesh, but don't forget that He is not a baby in the
manger anymore, but is the King of Kings and the Lord of
Lords and I pray that you will submit to His power in your
life today.
